The times we are living in are often desribed with the acronym VUCA. The letters stand for Volatile, Uncertain, Complex and Ambiguous. If we look at the challenges individuals and organisations are facing these attributes seem to fit very well – the number of relevant factors that play a role in decision making and execution of projects are plentyfold, often contradictory and exhausting. So, how do we find appropriate solutions to the challenges we face today and tomorrow?

Of course we can concentrate on what needs to be fixed. That will make us become experts in spotting and describing problems. However, if we want to reach solutions and keep everyone engaged and motivated, we’ll have to make them understand how they can be part of solutions by bringing in their talents, interests and unique perspective. This shift in focus can happen with the help of the principles and methods of Appreciative Inquiry  and the insights from Amy Edmondson over Psychological Safety.

BRAVING

BRAVING

Brené Brown has defined a wonderful acronym to describe how we can lead together within organisations and beyond: BRAVING. The letters stand for Boundaries, Reliability,  Accountibility, Vault, Integrity, Non-judgement and Generosity. Walking this way is not always easy. One of my tasks within every project is to make sure we stay aligned with these values and/or those that we agree upon.

Leadership is in Otto Scharmer’s words the capacity to shift the place within us from where we operate. The way most of us are brought up is to operate from external stimuli. He describes a powerful theory and process which allows us to go through different levels of listening and interacting towards action from a more deeper source. To go from one level to the next one we have to engage with an open mind, an open heart and open will. At the core of his theory stands the idea of leading from the emerging future.

The gifts that I bring in

The gifts that I bring in

From former colleagues I got mirrored back a few traits and skills that will help us to make the project we are collaborating in a success:

  • Curiosity. I really want to understand what makes people happy, successful, struggling, doing what they do… I am a very good listener, asking even better questions.
  • Healty work relationships. I am a big fan and supporter of trust, respect and nourishing relationships. I believe and work for these values so they become reality.
  • I love to make people shine. I’ll find out who likes to do what and we’ll create an environment together where everyone excells.
  • Excellent Project Management. I never loose sight of time, space and scope of the project we are in. Together with the team we’ll get all the lose ends and threads together and make the project a success.
